With his hands outstretched to indicate length, Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharref proclaimed that Pakistanis have their own brains.
“We cannot have this,” Musharraf said.
This statement was a reaction to suggestions by U.S. and European leaders that Musharraf could not be trusted to relinquish his office and hold elections as promised. Musharraf has been under fire recently for rolling back democratic changes in what many see as a move to retain power.
The Pakistani’s People Party has previously asserted that his 2007 election was rigged and that he further seeks to bend the rules. Since Musharraf’s 2007 election, Pakistan has been thrust into turmoil over protests to his continued rule which many judiciary members view as illegal. Recently military leaders have also called on Musharraf to step down as the commander of armed forces.
Musharraf has pledged to hold step down as military commander and hold new elections, but is using the current state of emergency as a reason for delays. If this continues, Pakistan could yet again face a military coup like the one that put musharraf in office back in 1999.
